Description:

Article: Understanding the work of Van Gogh Through a Mental Health Lens: Implications for Art Therapy.  This research briefing paper examines the art work of van Gogh and was written by Jordyn Beda from Brain Disorders Management as well as Maryam Mogawer, Emily Pokocky and Brenda Slomka from Mental Health and Disability Management. This PDF article is available for download only.

Abstract: This paper examines how the paintings of van Gogh differ before and after his institutionalization in 1889. By comparing a variety of paintings created throughout van Gogh’s career, this research examines how his later works differ in artistic style compared to his earlier works. The history of van Gogh’s life, including his mental ailments, along with the triumphs and tragedies he endured are well documented through numerous academic papers as well as letters written between van Gogh and his brother, Theo. By examining his works, we believe we may be able to tie important life events to changes in his artistic style, content and creativity. By analyzing and interpreting the artistic works of van Gogh, we also hope to understand how the dynamics of an individual’s mental health status can be expressed and understood through the lens of art.
